-been a picker for 50 odd years (Native American,Ethnographic,Art) ,but as far as picking up a great piece (resale-wise) for peanuts-the smalls,ie: Jewelry's where it's at by a long shot !
The Big Obvious Items just scream $$$ at the pickers-lots folks just tromp by the little stuff looking for a Rembrandt.
If you pick for profit-this is where it's at in today's overpicked jungle !
All the older gal dealers I met half a century ago, plus lots of younger 60's-70's hippies & hipsters knew too. They'd run up with some over the top gaudy broach the size of a blimp,in a state of pure bliss !
    This Forum is astounding............

I think too much Art School blinded me to the schlocky but beautiful glory of Costume Jewelry, you simply won't find a lot of Faberge out there at Earl's Barn Sale or the Lost Feline Thriftique.

Plus-what's easier to ship than a $1000 ring the size of a cheeto ?
Prob still plenty of folks out there looking for 'American Pickers' stuff-big signs, big 1940's harleys, big cars,etc-just aint happenin' at most sales, collectives and definitely not church/charity stores.
I know we've all seen the oddball biggie now and then-but if you look at the folks who reg post the most new finds/goodies here (as in 5-10 every week)-it's jewelry.
Considering the way the world economy's going-prob finally time for me to learn to like jewelry ( i finally get it).
No offense gals and guys-i could always see Lalique as art- Trifari not so much, but the marketplace says I'm wrong.

KSW-Here's another name for your new store,Granny's Dumpateria. There was (is ?) a store in Petaluma,Ca called 'Dead Peoples Stuff'. You might find a pic of their sign online-short & sweet.
Best type of businesses with cornball pun names-old time beauty shops (Shoppes !)-The Hairport,The Greatful Head,Pharoahs Hairum,United Hair Lines,Best Lil' Hairhouse In Texas (Thanks 'Atlas Obscura'). Hey- someone should start a Thread on nuttiest biz names.

    My kinda place :hilarious:
It does make me think though when I find files full of personal papers at car boot sales that the house clearance people have just scooped up. Their whole life in a pile of of mundane paperwork :(.

Speaking of 'Dead Peoples Stuff'-We just saw a YouTube show abt a young couple buying a house in Portugal. The sellers left all the antique, vintage stuff behind, all the furnishings-the bar was still fully stocked ! Any 200 year old brandy in there ?

Many years ago a friend of mine who knew I often went to estate auctions. She asked if she might accompany me one Saturday. I told her that it would be fine but suggested she drive herself as I would be likely staying until it was all said & done. Also,d many times when driving home from sales the only open spot in the car was the driver's seat. The rest of my SUV was filled to the roof with my treasures. ;) :hilarious::hilarious:

She did meet me at the sale & as I was digging through the various boxes I realized she was looking at me very strangely. When I asked her if something was wrong she asked me if it ever bothered me that I was digging through some "dead person's stuff". I thought about it for a moment & told her that it did occur to me in the beginning but I finally realized that there was cool stuff to be had & the original owner was not going to need it anymore. ;):p:p:hilarious::hilarious:

All of my favourite artists are dead. Which only goes to show that dead people make very good artists.:joyful:

Sad,the kids spend all their days TikToking & Texting. No time to create art,words,music-dreaming of becoming a YouTube Star or Tech Billionaire. If one can Tok or Text hard enough-it will simply manifest thru an act of pure will...the dead will inherit it all back someday (take that Stephen King !). I love dead art too.

How about the ‘Curl Up and Dye’ hair salon? I think that name originated in the stage play of ‘Steel Magnolias’ - Also used in the film of the same name starring Dolly Parton as Truvy, owner of said salon…
A google search turns up tons of salons using the name currently…

A famous one here for a while was the Angry Chair - they did crazy hair dye colors before anyone else in the area.

As for jewelry - way ahead of you. I've been selling on eBay for close to two decades. Titrating down now though. Most of it's been costume because you can pack a lot of it into a small space, easily shipped, it can sometimes be found for peanuts and resold for rather more, and until recently demand was good.

evelyb- the hippie ladies of my youth were nuts for big 3 foot wide costume broaches & Bakelite, bakelite & more bakelite...more cowbell.
