Featured Metal bottle stop or inkwell closure?

Hello! I recently found this in an old landfill. It was surrounded by broken torpedo bottles. I’m not sure if it’s a stopper for one of the bottles or for an inkwell!

It may be metal colored but it looks like glass to me. Conchoidal chip right on the front edge.

If you could elaborate a little on your little piece. What is it made of? Do you have any other pics at different angles.

I get BV as the 2 initials.

BV Sauce or Gravy mix is still available.

I thought it was made of metal, however when I just tested it with a hand held metal detector it didn’t react.

Looking at the bottom. Does it look like it is broken and was a longer piece at one time and the missing part is a mystery. If it is glass or ceramic it could be an old bottle stopper

It's pretty typical of an older ink bottle stopper.

 

Nothing more fun than digging an old dump-bottles,old dolls and god knows what else.We found an old city dump once in California and found (what we believed) was the 1906 Earthquake rubble layer-cobblestones,ancient fire hydrant,bottles,enamel signs and some trace of ash and burn.Detecting & digging's a hoot-I may not be able to afford the excavation of Oak Island,but a $20 Shovel and a used Metal Detector is a can do.
For me anyway-more fun than Golf !

I also agree with the glass stopper. The photo of the bottom shows that something was broken off. But what the bottle contained could be anything!

 

My Larkin soap company bottles have a stopper like that. I think they contained sachet.

 

Dig/Look for the old stuff-big blobby (smeared on top) applied lip,and a pit,depression (pontil mark) on the base-crooked and crude w/ mineralization and patina.1880's and before better- pre Civil War even better.Lots of you folks live in very old parts of the US (Civil War/Revolution & earlier) and some of you may have lived in your hometowns your entire life-ask your lifelong neighbors if you can probe & metal detect.Out here (West Coast) pretty new,pre 1860's settlements very tiny and scarce.If you've got to live thru snow & humidity make it work for with all that amazing wonderful history right where you live.

 

Met the people who live in the house my grandparents built in 1900. They wanted to know why all the soil in the yard is saturated with broken glass.

Didn't know it was. Haven't got a clue.
