73C7FAA3-90DA-4938-9121-9EC975A921D8.jpeg We have come across this 3’ x 2’ nautical themed painting by Ben Richmond. I can find several paintings with one ship but this one has a 2 nd ship in the distance in the fog. The lady said the family had this for a long time. If you can give any info if it’s real or not and if it’s worth looking into

    Nice painting.
You could contact him. He still has a gallery in Marblehead. It's hard to tell from your pic if it is a painting or print. Have you looked at it with magnifying glass or loupe? There are a lot of prints of his paintings.

Think you'll find the Marblehead gallery has now closed.

I wasn't familiar with Ben Richmond but, from a quick internet search, it seems he was similar to Thomas Kincaide, a painter who produced not fine art but decorative paintings for a wider audience. (He even called himself "Keeper of Light" while Thomas Kinkade called himself "Painter of Light.") He seems to have been active in the 1980s-2000s. Like Kinkade, Richmond's business model was to produce a limited number of original work and sell quantities of multiples. That's why you'll see more of his prints on offer than oil paintings. I would think the market isn't very strong as he's no longer active and was a regional painter when he was but I could be wrong. You can check on-line resources (eBay, etc.) for offerings of his oils although you'll want to disregard asking prices which may well be inflated and focus on sold prices.

Would a print justify that frame? Not to me, but...

I didn't imply that the OPs was a print.

It could be a giclée on canvas. These are often framed up with inexpensive but "fancy looking" frames to make them seem valuable.

    No, you didn't.
    Bulldogs thought it might, though.

I'm in no position to say, but it was my initial impression that the image was an original, partially based on the way it's framed.

Yes, Mark...it certainly could be. I've only seen a few Giclee prints, but they were very impressive. Thanks...

it is impossible to tell from one pic. giclee, print, or original painting. If I had it in hand it would be no problem.
Send it to me and Ill figure it out lol

Thanks guys. It’s definitely oil on canvas not a print and glad to have some answers. I have seen some of his work but most have just the single ship and this is the only one I seen with 2. Thank you all for trying to educate me. I have more pics but need to make them smaller to post

I don't think the second ship is going to make a difference in price.

    Did not!
I just couldn't tell from the first pic.
The added pics show much better the brush strokes.
