Navajo cameo??

The only thing I could find like this was a photo that references an eBay listing that can no longer be found on eBay. The caption said Navajo cameo. I'm not so sure of that. Thoughts? What's the stone?

 

The animal looks like an antelope, so maybe this was made in Africa? The stone looks like African Jade.

 

Looks like a commercially carved garnet from Africa,possible frame made by a hobbyist.

 

It does look like an antelope of some kind. Here's an old Etsy listing (complete with original tag), for a similar necklace with a carved lion. My guess would be that Reed & Barton had a line of these with different African animals.
