And two beautiful watermills, the Collse and the Genneper watermill. Both originally Medieval, and both painted by Vincent van Gogh. Not that well known outside our town though, tourists want to see windmills, not beautiful Medieval watermills.

I used to be a guide in our region and noticed that once you got the tourists inside a watermill, they were impressed by that Medieval technology. And outside, the land around the mill is much more tranquil than around a windmill, wooded countryside with a gentle brook.:)

There were more watermills then the two you mention, according to a map from around 1560:

    One near Stratumseind.

I know, but they aren't there anymore. Sacrificed to modernity? One of the watermills near the university was demolished illegally in the 1950s, so a uni building could be built on the spot.

That's awesome. Great use for them.

My late father used to repair hydro-electric power plants for the local utility. Some of them were close to antique even then. (Edison Electric plates on the wall) One even had one of those no-dial hand cranked phones on the wall inside. It still worked! It connected to the office, where a kind lady would place a call for you. The utility must have been run by the Dutch, because they stopped using all of those power plants and went "modern" and started buying power from Canada.

What a great variety! Thank you for your post . Maybe it’s a good idea to string mine as well, although I am not going to wear them ( not my style…).
