I need help identifying this. I have this giant cast iron pot/vat in my front yard, and I can't find information about it. I live just outside of Syracuse, NY, and I believe it was used for processing salt, but I could be totally wrong. You see them in people's yards occasionally around here, but I don't see anything about them in my research.

Welcome, ACollier. Unfortunately your Gallery pic cannot be seen by anyone but you because it is set to Private instead of Public. Once you change that we can help you.

I would try to get your cauldron tipped over to check for markings. Also, please share measurements.

What you're showing looks to be around 3 to 4 feet in diameter.....used to be used for anything from Laundry, to mass cooking, to making lye soap, among anything else!! Parents had 2 of the larger size in the yard for YEARS they acquired on the Island....they just sat there....upside down!!! You can see from the post/pin on the one end (one on opposite side too) meant to hang over a fire.....

Looks like it’s made to fit in some sort of cradle/stand..

I'll check for markings; unfortunately, tipping it over is not an option. It will need a decent-sized piece of equipment to move it at all, as it likely weighs a couple hundred pounds.

looks like cast iron, so it would withstand fluid iron. a crucible from a foundry ?

It was funny.....no matter HOW I worded my query, for the fun of it, both Google and DuckDuckGo wanted to show me Cast Iron SKILLETS!!!! They have NO Interpretive SKILLS!!!!

I know! I've tried googling every phrase I can think of, and it comes back with ordinary cookware

That was my thought too. It seems way too large to be a household item.
