  1. Hi all,
I found this wonderful looking mantle clock and was wondering if anyone here might be able to give me any info as to period, background, anything really. It runs wonderfully and has a great sounding chime and I would like to put a story ar 20220422_112723.jpg 20220422_112245.jpg 20220422_112710.png ound it as well

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

If that "TIFFANY & co" NEW YORK, on the back in the works, is legit you might have a NICE piece of change on your hands!!! It's not my style, but looks to be in great condition! Does it run? When you say you "Found", you must have purchased it? Is it ALL there? You may already HAVE a story around it!!

Are there any markings on the dial face? Have you taken off the chime bell to show the interior? Can you get a more legible view/photo of the marks on the mechanism, particularly the round one below the bell?

With the caveat that I am by no means a clock expert -
The movement looks similar to these from mid-19th century French clocks:

According to an interesting article (citation below), "oftentimes, the importer or retailer ALSO has their name stamped on the movement, and sometimes required the movement maker to leave their name off of the outside of the movement ... Be sure to examine the name of the company, as there were oftentimes great similarities in the naming. The street address of the firm can also be used to assign a narrow date range to your clock."

  6. Its a Tiffany Commissioned clock mechanism made by Jape Freres. The works show their award badge but I am not sure when the award was (they've received probably a dozen or so)

You should be able to date it by the Tiffany & Co. logo. It's evolved since the company's founding.

Doing a search on the website of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors turned up a link to this list of known stamps on French movements, including those of Japy Freres:

Some are also shown in the link I provided earlier to a nawcc article. Threads there also refer to a list in their "index", but as a non-member I can't seem to find access. I agree with @Kronos that the nawcc.org would be a good place to post your questions.

    JMHO.
    definitely not "commissioned by" anybody.
Japy Frères was the second-best capitalized company of the Second Empire.
stylewise with the allusions to the Roman Empire (with a hint by the winged helmet) - which was the big prototype for both French Empires - it may be before the Franco-Prussian War and the French defeat and after 1853 when the name of the company changed to Tiffany & Co..

French metal casting at it's best. Always impressed with their 19th c. pieces.
