Featured Antique doll from woman born in 1860. Marked No 2

I hate doing similar things though. If Sindy doesn't have lashes, I have to put them in and I detest doing it. It's a vile fiddly job.
I managed to get hold of a Sindy Silver Trendy a while back, a really expensive doll. Of course she had no lashes and that particular type has the slot-in from outside, not the sewn in from inside type. Got them in and...I'd scraped Sindy's pupil. I was so annoyed with myself. It's easily remedied and can't ever tell but was I ever cross at my clumsiness. One of very many things I've done ( thrown expensive items away in my early days :O)

One thing (which you can't tell from photos), this doll has zero smell even touching my nose right up to her. The family who owned her is Swiss/German and they are obsessively clean. It probably helps we are in a dry climate too.

Thinking that the doll has been played with for generations, looking at the careful old repair to the arms, etc. This was not a collector's item, but was used as a toy to be played with handed down from grandmother to mother to granddaughter (granddaughter now 80). Of course this has resulted in condition issues.

That said, I have no expectation for value over about $20 or so. I don't think celluloid (comparing it to jewelry items, etc I've had, but maybe it is!) Does seem to be plastic-like. (Not bisque.)

 

Back again.

So the stockings are sewn on, I'm thinking a clever homemade repair maybe. They are permanently on there. Fabric definitely seems older.

Definitely gonna list on Ebay and will make a huge point "parts only, for repair" both in title and many other places. Will not over sell this at all --under sell if anything. I don't want a return. But can add any funds on the fundraiser which will be great.

I honestly think those two cracks in the face and neck happened overnight without the doll being touched, which of course is not great news. Suggests things are falling apart.

 

I guess one thing I need is how to generally describe this doll. Does the "No 2" suggest a maker or anything?? Should I just say "19C doll?"

 

Early 20th century .....perhaps up to 1920's.

Even tho the socks are sewn on, it's hand stitching which could very easily be removed. Certainly not permanent.........

However, if you're going to sell, sell as you got her.

Just want to add....if this is wax,then she'll be quite valuable. She could also be wax over plaster. The number on the back of her head is possibly the size xx
( Oh and when I mentioned smell, I didn't mean a dirt smell, I meant a chemical smell in case it was celluloid. I think it's much more likely now to be wax or wax over plaster xx )

I've only owned one wax head doll. There was no question as to the wax..........they have a look of their own too.

A simple scratch of one's fingernail will determine if OP's doll has a wax coating.

I agree with Bou that the 2 1/2
is more than likely a size #.

Almost positive she is not wax. Nothing waxy at all on the surface.

Ah--now understand the smell question. I thought because she looked stained, etc. But I'm glad you asked because it reminded me to note in the listing that she was clean smelling.

Looking at Judy's doll with the lovely costume, the way the hole is in the face reminds me of the material in mine. So if that doll is celluloid, pretty sure that's what I have.

 

Probably celluloid then...she's lovely I think. xx
