IMG_2460 (1).jpg IMG_2469.jpg IMG_2470.jpg I would be grateful for any information on this Icon. It appears to be very old. I managed to find out it is a Glykophilousa icon. I bought it in an Antique fair in France where I live.

The wood certainly looks old from the back. But I am troubled by three things. First, most old paintings on wood panel that I have seen are done on much thinner wood - done to minimize warping and splitting. Second, I see what look like nails or nail holes on the back that do not show up on the front. Third given age condition of back, would expect more signs of damage or age on the front if they were done together.

Together this makes me think an old piece of wood (say salvage from a barn) was chosen for a newer painting on the front. Top planed down and filled before painting, then an old style icon painted on top.

Hi @Villaret and nice clear job on your images! NEXT time you post, it would be most helpful if JUST before you hit post, click on the very TOP of your images list....that says to "INSERT EVERY IMAGE AS a FULL IMAGE".....it will insert ALL of them FULL size!! Less clicking for everyone and much easier for ALL to see!! Thank you so much!! I'm posting these full size for you.....

Thanks Jeff. It does seem to be on some kind of canvas or hessian. Thanks for sorting the photo's for me. Bit of a novice still.

years ago (many ) I remember meeting a gentleman i Greece who painted these icons

I never looked to see what he painted on or for whom, lack of interest at 20 I guess honte.gif

All I can say here is that the painting is incredible shape compared to the wood ....

The wood looks incredibly old but the paint looks brand new. Not meant to fool anyone from the looks of it, just meant to look cool.
