Deco bookend identification help

Hi all, I’ve had this pair of deco bookends for a long time but have not been able to find the maker. Looks to me to be a Lorenzl or French style but assuming a copy by an American maker like JB Hirsch? They each measure 15cm high (figures alone 13cm). Does anyone know? Many thanks.

 

This seller believes they are from the 1980s, but does not explain why.

Thanks @Roaring20s that's them but yes I’d be highly surprised if they were from the 80s. I’d think 30s or 40s if not earlier. The celluloid heads aren’t something I’ve seen in more recent deco copies.

 

They do resemble Hirsch's work. Maybe a mark under the felt?

 

There appears to be something under the back of the collar. Numbers?

 

Wow well spotted @say_it_slowly it’s tough to see but says PAT. PEND. - so patent pending would give me further reason to think an American company and either between wars or soon after WW2 when lots of French molds were taken to USA (or could have been a local copy made too).

 

Thanks @milestoneks - one of the felt pieces is loose but alas nothing underneath.

 

Interesting info here about Hirsch production - seems to confirm the later production were metal faces and moulds mostly 1930s (French style not copies).
