Baby on dolphin black lacquered lidded box

    I found this box and hoping it's wood and not resin and painted by hand rather than some quicker process.

    Thoughts?

    Does anyone recognize the country of origin or mythology involved?

    It's four inches wide by three inches high.

    A dead link on Google is titled "Child on Carp Fish in Lotus Ponds Signifying Fertility".

    Yours does seem to be holding a lotus flower.

    There is one on Ebay the same as yours seller is saying hard plastic hand painted. Has a People's republic of China sticker on the bottom.

    Thank you. If it was wood, molding it like that would be time intensive or maybe impossible. I haven't studied these kinds of items. The imperfections of the paint surface make it look more organic.
