It's a contemporary basket from Pakistan, made to "look like" a Native American Indian basket.

Things to look for, to identify it as Pakistani, are first, the fact that it is made from palm fiber, not used for Native American baskets. Also, the Pakistani baskets often feature colored design patterns, a rougher side of the basket that isn't trimmed off like Native American Indian baskets, and usually have a herringbone rim finish. When you see all these characteristics on a single basket, it is almost always made in Pakistan.

Good morning - I have to say I just love the informative comments and information from everyone plus the friendly chats I have learned so much - thank you. My 10c worth on this basket. In SA I would say this is a basket would be made of ilala palm and dyed with natural vegetable dyes. I used to go into the rural areas of KwaZulu natal and buy this type of basket from the rural people who made them. I think worldwide these natural palm fibres have always been used for baskets. I would have expected the back of the basket to have been a lot neater though if it was from our region
