Because this copper box has the form of a 18th century book, I think this it is a fascinating object. Engraved with the crest of Charles V of Habsburg (1500-1558). I suspect its from the late 19th or early 20th century. Does anyone has more about this object or knows some online info? Thanks in advance!

    Copper? ...or perhaps brass?

Brass is also possible. I’m afraid I cannot see the difference.

I thought those were made to hide money or jewelry.

A very cool thing, especially in between the books. I don’t know, but I will guess brass.

    I'd think brass too.

Not appropriate for storing tobacco (which needs humidity.)

Here are some pics with Charles V in one of my books with the brass box. 9F4D6F18-08EE-4642-ACEF-4F0D95BF78D2.jpeg 41DFF56B-CE60-493E-9145-497C5E4D54D2.jpeg

Jumping in with a little explanation:
Copper v. brass leads to confusion in the Netherlands.
Dutch people tend to call brass "geel koper" (yellow copper), and copper "rood koper" (red copper).
The official Dutch words for brass are either "latoenkoper" or "messing", depending on the thickness. The official word for copper is.... koper.
Long story short, this box is brass.:playful:

Our Charles/Karel V is the same as Spain's Charles/Carlos I, which is more familiar to @Debora , who may be able to recognize your nice tobacco box.

Certainly a Hapsburg coat of arms. How did you identify it as being that of Charles V? I find this as his coat of arms and the partitions differ.

To be honest about this, I recognized the Habsburg crest, so I checked Charles V. That seemed comparible. After that I checked the crest of his son Philip II and that was different, so I assumed the later monarchs had different crests.
