this echo's my understanding of the term...

Trench art' is a term used to describe objects made from the debris and by-products of modern warfare. Trench Art is usually associated with the First World War, although similar items have been produced in other conflicts too. Most trench art was made by servicemen to pass the time when not in the front line.

    &

Trench art is any decorative item made by soldiers, prisoners of war, or civilians where the manufacture is directly linked to armed conflict or its consequences. It offers an insight not only to their feelings and emotions about the war, but also their surroundings and the materials they had available to them.

There are "trench art" pieces hotly collected from the USA Civil War and earlier, although they weren't called that originally. The tradition goes as far back as there were soldiers with time on their hands. It was just "stuff soldiers made when they were waiting around."
