Featured Style & Stone of this 14K Ring?

    Hi All,

I have started this letter 3 times and wiped out all my work! I've also been offline for a bit thanks to a newer, slower PC with none of my saved passwords so I'm eager to get back to learning and ID'ing jewels.

I acquired this 14K rose gold ring, tested, only mark is "W-W-W" or "M-M-M". Style looks like Arts & Crafts or Art Nouveau to me. The setting is a bezel with "bent over" edges on the top of the stone. Does that suggest hand-made work? There are some ragged spots along this top edge.

The stone looks green tourmaline and was acquired in New Hampshire; Maine to the north is known for tourmaline mines. Oddly, the stone tests in 14K_Rose_gold_green_A&C_ring_1.JPG 14K_Rose_gold_green_A&C_ring_2.JPG 14K_Rose_gold_green_A&C_ring_3.JPG 14K_Rose_gold_green_A&C_ring_4.JPG 14K_Rose_gold_green_A&C_ring_5.JPG "Tanzanite/Aqua" and also "Quartz/Amethyst/Citrine" ranges on my Presidium Gem Tester. There are some light thin scratches on the table.

I'm hoping someone can help place age, style, maker and maybe stone. It looks so tourmaline to me and with the long parallel facets it's easy to see there appear to be no inclusions. I have some decent looks to silver makers' hallmarks but no good resources for gold.

Thanks so much for your help!

I think the maker is White, Wile & Warner!

I agree that it really does look like tourmaline, but I'm not an expert by any means.

Did you clean the stone with alcohol before testing? The stone looks like tourmaline and most stones are set by hand. The ring looks like it was cast, strange on the inside of the ring maybe 3/4 shank replacement and it was sized.

JMHO, neither Arts and Crafts nor Art Nouveau in style.

I love that buff top stone. My vote is for tourmaline.

Tourmaline in 14k is my guess - late 40s maybe? It looks like a tank ring...almost.

As noted, very nice ring. Someone said make sure the stone is clean before testing :) Sure does visually look like it's a tourmaline. Based on style I believe it is the 1930's but I suppose could be 1940's. Maker is White, Wile & Warner, established in Buffalo NY circa 1934. Ah, bugger! I wrote a really long reply yesterday and it's all gone!

Thanks to all! I found 2 ads for the WWW company after I got the ID from @squarecoats . Both are for Christmas 1916 and one shows my exact ring!

I not to @George Chaney for the Lang tip. I have used them to look up terms but didn't realize they had info on makers. Their dating of 1934 on the logo they had is later than my ring, but it is a different version of the logo, too.

And, @komokwa , thanks for the compliments on the pics. However, my question regarding "Does that suggest hand-made work?" refers to the previous sentence about the bezel, not the following about the damage. I wasn't suggesting the artisan would have intentionally made the edge ragged.;)

To @Hollyblue , I soaked the ring in soapy water a long time and then used a toothbrush to clear off the muck. So, I don't think the odd result on the Presidium is due to dirt; maybe I need to recalibrate. It has been very cold in the house and I think that affects the instrument.

I did note in my original post that the ring has been resized; you can see the "seam line". I don't think the shank is mostly replaced; these is not evidence of any additional work.

I've got my answers with your help. Thanks to all!

What is in the circled area? It looks like a blob of solder and the original maker would not have left it looking that way.

It's just an illusion. There is no blob, both sides are actually smooth, like they should be. I'll try to get a better pic. Maybe from the top down. Thanks for clarifying!
