Trip98, I am just curious . . . does the same design appear on both sides of the Minton cup?

This may be a double post but --

Trip98, that is exactly what I meant. ;)

It is a lovely cup, and to my way of thinking is all the more beautiful with the simple, elegant design on the handle.

I can just imagine a table full of that pattern in a very expensive house. (Which is why I have mostly Corelle at this point. )

    Thanks guys!

I have good and bad news...

First: yes Moon, these were internet purchases and no, I only know 1 of 3 artist.

Second: All items arrived and 2 of 3 pieces are what I thought they were. The Jesus piece is oil on canvas, the Harper piece gouache on paper and the seated child on beach piece is a print of an oil painting....not a true oil. But that's ok, not a big deal, even "experienced buyers" such as myself can be fooled by images over the net.

The bad news: the harper arrived today damaged! The seller only packaged the piece in a large envelope and that's it. No bubble-wrap, foam peanuts, box, nothing! Only a envelope. The glass shattered and scraped and scratched the piece. Not too bad, but bad enough to notice. With all that being said, I'm still happy with my $70 purchases and won't file claims for either piece nor leave NEGS. Unfortunately, these are some of the unfortunates one has to deal with when purchasing items for re-sale online. You take the good with the bad and the bad with the good and move on. I've been doing this for too long to sweat the small stuff.

This is another little painting purchased from another seller...

(anyone know what type of flowers these are?)

I've been posting some artwork as of late because I know you all are sick of seeing the Asian vintage and antique items. Thought I'd change it up a bit.

@Trip, very nice finds! I really like that vase (the first one).

No, not yet, new seller, but I'm sure someone will hit them soon if he/she keeps this up. Such a shame that a nice piece of artwork was handled and packaged so poorly. They're lucky I have compassion...

Well, I'm sure you'll come out okay on it all Nuff. How old is that religious painting? It's very nice and looks like an interesting one!
You know, it's funny, I was talking with a colleague in the antiques industry the other day and he told me that now more than ever, auction houses are seeing that the Chinese market is slowing for all but the very best pieces. Jade is still strong, but they are not putting up with some of the middling-to-good pieces they were buying up like hotcakes a few years ago, and those items are going completely unsold. I found that interesting, and made a mental note to personally try to be a little bit more discerning, and also to try to focus more on art and other antiques in the marketplace. I'm also finding that Japanese items are just dead in the water.

True. That piece I believe is 19th C. and is somewhat similar to the one you had not too long ago.

That market is slowing a bit, but still the strongest of them all. The Japanese market has been soft for a number of years...except for the very best and most rare pieces.

It sucks because there are so many beautiful Japanese pieces, but even really striking ones can be a hard sell. I need to just bite my hand before I click Buy, or pull out my wallet, when it comes to Japanese pieces. It's hard when you see something amazing though.

    Awesome, Baker......thank you!

@Moon. Yeah, I know what you mean. I was in a TS the other day and didn't even both purchasing a number of traditional woodblocks they had laying around. The non-traditional modern (1930s, 40s etc.) looking pieces seem to sell pretty well though.

If you're lucky enough, Kozan and Ando do very well (recall the damaged and repaired piece we pulled while on vaca last year? see below). Authentic antique Netsukes and Samurai swords and sword pieces also do well. Although, these items are in a class by themselves similar to miniature portraits.

Most of the damage is focused in this area...

Them white spots ain't suppose to be their. Poor little painting, they treated you so unfair! :bigtears:

(I'll just say they're stars, comets and a crescent moon... :D)

I cannot recall seeing that Kozan piece before, or anything about it. I will have to research that so I know the mark if I see it. They must sell for some big money. Did you consign it? I haven't gotten into netsukes and sword pieces, because I don't feel confident picking the good ones from the mediocre. It's an area I know almost nothing about and one in which estate sale companies are quick to put pretty high prices on, here.

I would think they are not easily found, at least the swords, only nestukes I see are cheap knock offs
    The market certainly changes....

@Moon. I posted it within this Finds Thread last year when we got back from vaca. Picked it out of an antique shop where the owners were saying they had 40 something years of experience in the trade and also do appraisals if we needed one. My DH and I just looked at each other and go "oh yeah, well how much do you want for this vase?" They're replay was something to the effect of "this Chinese vase here?, we'll take $XXX". After a bit of negotiation because of the old repair and damage, they gave us roughly 60% or 65% off their original asking price. We walked out of there feeling pretty good. Not only because we got a great deal on a "Chinese" vase, but we were looked upon like some young-bucks who didn't really know much about antiques. My DH and I get this "look" all the time. Or some folks will even go as far to say: "you'll don't look like you're into antiques". Are you kidding me!? What does one suppose to "look like" that's into antiques?

Anyway, this should help you with some of his marks...

    KOZAN MARKS.jpg

We sold that Japanese Kozan piece picked from those folks on eBay. Got around $800 for it. If there wasn't any old repair and damage, I'm sure well into the four-figures it would have sold for.

It happens Sharona, some folks just don't have common sense. The same happened with a Chinese ewer last year we purchased out of DC. The darn thing arrived in a million pieces.
