My client brought me this lovely little woven piece sealed under glass - shows some age and could have been an exhibition piece from a museum. Appears tribal but not sure if Persian? The threads are very fine and might be a silk mix. This is definitely outside of my comfort zone! Anyone have any thoughts? Glass frame measures approx. 12 x 10 inches and the piece itself approx. 8.5 x 5.12 inches. Thank you!!!! IMG_5367.jpg IMG_5368.jpg IMG_5369.jpg IMG_5370.jpg IMG_5371.jpg IMG_5372.jpg

Looks loom woven, probably handwoven rather than machine. I need better closeups to be sure, but it looks like the pattern on one end shows the reverse of the pattern on the other end. It looks like the type of "overshot" weaving seen in coverlets (among other places), where the colored weft travels (floats) over several warps to create the pattern. This results in one design showing on the front, and a sort of reverse image showing on the back of the textile. Perhaps this piece was a sampler to demonstrate the effect.

The design looks similar to textiles from a variety of places such as Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, as well as the US and Canada. Identifying the fibers might be helpful, but probably not diagnostic.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

This won't help with the fibers....that needs a better close-up, but I did enlarge it 3X..........

Thanks Aqui. In order to analyze the weave, though, I would need to be able to see the threads.

Unfortunately I can not take it out of it's housing. I can try to get better close ups tomorrow when I am back at the gallery. I did check out some Scandinavian woven textiles and it does have some similarity.

My knee jerk was Scandinavian as well. No idea why. My second thought was it'd make a great dollhouse rug ! But I say that a lot.

Here are a couple of more close ups. Sorry for the quality. It is framed under glass which makes the glare difficult! IMG_5415.JPG IMG_5416.JPG IMG_5414.JPG

The pattern does seem to be reversed on each end - the pattern of the large stripe on the right shows what you would see on the back of the large stripe on the left (and vice versa). And is does appear to be an "overshot" weave using supplementary colored wefts. "Designs were focused on repeating geometric patterns that were created by using a supplementary weft that was typically a dyed woolen yarn over a cotton plain weave background."
