Let us watch! Even if we can't go, we can look and drool and may point stuff out. There are a bunch of glassies, potties, furniture geeks and joolies here.

I live in Nassau County, Long Island. I wish I could come and check the items out in person. I didn't read all of the replies, but I wish you the best. Some of those estate sale people on Long Island are crooks and charge a lot. Be careful.

My husband said when I am gone one day, he is going to rent a huge dumpster and throw all of my antiques out in it to get rid of them. I told him if he does that I am going to haunt him from beyond the grave.

Just so my kids know what my items are and what they are worth, I made over 1,000 Youtube videos explaining the values of all my antiques and the history behind each and every one of them. I told them if something happens to me, watch my videos and if their father rents a dumpster, throw him in it instead of my valuable antiques, lol.

So it looks like you are there and have started sorting. But you have someone coming to set up sale and do pricing, so is that person going to tag everything first or run it free for all giving prices at the desk? And what are you looking for from your posts here? What information is useful? Yard sale pricing, junk/not junk, or something else?

I’m honestly not sure how much tagging they will do. For us, as much as we like money, it’s mostly about not having to put things in a dumpster.

Any and all information is useful and appreciated. I often have a general idea about how old something is, but I’m not always right. I also don’t often know how much something is likely to bring. Having a general idea helps me decide if I should ask them to put a reserve on it, or if it’s going to bring in so little I might as well keep it.

Hi they generally don't put prices on items. Most estate sale runners out here don't.

You can point out to them when you meet that an item(s) you don't want to part with for less than a particular price but in general they are savvy with how much to charge people so that it sells and it moves. Most of their customers are resellers so there has to be enough room for a person to buy it and then flip it at a profit. And there has to be enough items to look through to bring in sales.

Just think of this way if you can, how many items can you hold onto if they don't sell at the sale? Do you have room or the desire to hold onto many items or have to figure out how to move them out of the house? That could be costly and more work than you would want to deal with.

I sympathize with your situation, as I have been thru losing my parents and grandparents and had to figure out what to keep. We didn't have an estate sale, I just took some items that my siblings didn't want that I could keep here in my apt for posterity and for memories. I had to let go of some of my grandparents things because I did not have the room to take them home.

    All the best to you.

We’re getting rid of everything that doesn’t fit in a 10x10 pod, so lots of hard choices. Almost as hard as finding the things we do want, there’s just so much stuff.

    Thanks for the empathy!

So how did it go? Did they clean everything out of your house, or are you left with stuff to move to thrifts, dumpsters, etc. Was it worth getting them in there?

Still left with lots and lots of stuff. Thought of you yesterday when I saw the drum kit (or what’s left of it, haven’t unearthed it yet) peeking out of a section of the pile that is the basement. It was (is?) an old big band kit.

The sale was a success on multiple levels, in that we made a decent amount of money under the circumstances, some stuff got taken away, and particularly because a bunch of fun family stuff was discovered in the process. I think the gross was around $5,000, not bad for a sale with no jewelry, designer stuff, silver, or serious art.

Then the “charity” people and clean out people removed about 40 cubic yards of stuff. Unfortunately the “Charity” people were an absolute nightmare, I will be making a warning post about them later.

    The house is still full.

If you just want it gone, one option is a box sale. You buy a bunch of boxes somewhere, and sell the box for (price) to be filled with whatever the buyer can find. They don't have to be able to close the box lid. You'd be surprised what buyers will haul off if it's essentially free anyway. You could also use trash bags. A local church does this at their rummage sales, very successfully.

Real estate agents sometimes have motivation in recommendations. They may get an occasional “tip” for refferals.

The sale already happened. Still have a lot of stuff, and I should probably post in the Sell and Free forums. Keep an eye out over the next few days.
