My mum came across the smaller of the two horses many many years ago in Cairns. Years later I came across another one in Sydney - identical in every way, except larger, (in better condition) but its ears face the other way. Big one about 75cm tall, smaller 50cm.

The paint is very faded but you can see they were both painted and carved identically. I have never come across others. They I assume are old, as the bolts are of a very old design and the timber has shrunk over the years.

Perhaps at some stage they were common.?

    thanks in advance!

    Phil

well the rain's stopped in Sydney now.. we got off lightly! Yeah identical, the smaller one is at least 40 years old as that's when she bought it and it was old & dusty then (deceased estate I think)

They are VERY heavy, the bolts are western style (not balinese like) but rusty with square heads. Could be Indonesian, they style is arabian with the manes & scimitar scabbard. Can't pick the timber, it's light in colour (like oak or maple) but very heavy and brittle..

    cheers!

These are typically recent-ish mports from Asia designed to look older than they are. Some from India, some from Indonesia. You'll find many other examples with an Google Images search. I'd suspect yours were from the 1980s when those colors were popular in home decoration.

Yes, I saw this and was thinking someone went to a lot of trouble for a little tail.
