I paid 10€ for it in a jumble sale (is that correct?), I plan to give it to my girlfriend as a gift and I would like to know how old it could be. Also, I can't open it and I've tried many things. It has a symbol which I can't identify.

Thanks a lot for your help!

The second photo looks like clear glass, that was probably meant for a lock of hair from your loved one.
I think it is a so called pocket watch locket, a locket modelled after a pocket watch. I have one as well. It looks like a pocket watch from the outside, except there is no turning mechanism, on the inside it is a true locket. Mine is on a chatelaine watch chain, but I've seen them on guard chains as well.

Try and see if the top round bale unscrews. That might do it.

Mine is slightly different, I'll check. I think you just apply pressure to the side where the dots are, but I'm sure you have already tried that.
    Obb's suggestion could also work.

It has probably been shut with too much pressure to the top.
If it didn't have the picture, I would suggest soaking it in oil and keep trying. But not with that picture.

I just checked, mine has a front panel with a hinge on the left, and you open it by sliding your nail on the right and pushing it up. Yours looks like it has a different construction.

Yes, yours is different from mine. The side with the clear glass looks thicker, maybe there is a lid-like thing there.
Here is mine, the photos are a bit dark, but can you see where it opens (hopefully).

Thank you. It is 14k gold with black enamel, the chain is gold plated, but still in good condition.
Mine is late 19th, looks like yours could be too. There are recent replicas, but the glass on yours looks old.

Or raised dots forming an arrow you are meant to be able to find by touch. It opens either by lifting up there or squeezing down there. (More likely lifting up.) What does it look like from the edge opposite the side with the arrow? Is there a visible hinge?

Now that you mention it, yes, on the opposite edge there's something like a hinge but too tightly closed, what a shame.
