I have owned this box for a while...plan on keeping it. It is pine and finely hand painted. This would be considered tole? Possibly Italian or French. It has age to it...I was thinking late 19th century. What do you think? 20181220_170354_HDR-1024x655.jpg 20181220_170419_HDR-1024x576.jpg 20181220_170611_HDR-1024x530.jpg 20181220_170439_HDR-1024x576.jpg 20181220_170448_HDR-1024x576.jpg 20181220_170505_HDR-1024x1008.jpg 20181220_170542_HDR-1024x606.jpg 20181220_170552_HDR-1024x998.jpg

I understood that tole ware was usually painted on metal, usually tin.
    Very pretty box.

That’s just an example to show tole wood box, (even if not true definition) I DO think your design looks similar to those saying Italy. Why don’t you Google around a bit and see what else you see.

Painted wood boxes with such hinges are common in the Alps part of europe but here the design is really not what we call "Alpenländisch" as you said french or italian?
The scrolls and flowers comes more from books of model influences, not traditional as the usual seen, in my opinion second half of the 19th century looking on the varnish on this picture too.

It's 100 years old, what make me say it's not a piece of folk art from the Alps too is that they are no way to rad the pictures painted, on pieces made for a wedding for example, you can found some representation of birds, basket of fruits etc.
Here it's only a "décor" for my eyes, but it can be totally different for somebody coming from the region of origin of this box, need to wait others advices.

I've found in one of my books a picture of the same use of scrolls in painted wood, here it is in the Baroque period for Switzerland, you can compare with yours for the design and the manner of painting(3d effect for example).

I've found some more infos about the use of the grey-blue color which was very "tendance" in US at the end of the 19th century, I make a scan of another book later.
