Woven Asian (?) Bowl - origin ?

Any suggestions as to the origin of this woven bowl ?

It was advertised as Asian and supposedly of some age. It appears to me to be not terribly old, but quite expertly made - in my amateur opinion.

Any info would be much appreciated !

 

While you're waiting for some of the basket expert to appear, I'll just note that it resembles baskets said to be Tonga. Whether right or wrong I don't know.

Not from Tonga in the Pacific, but from Zimbabwe (Africa). Made by Tonga artisans in the Binga region, so often referred to as Tonga-Binga baskets.

Just an added comment. This has correctly been identified as an African basket, from Zimbabwe. But it's important not to confuse these with baskets from the Kingdom of Tonga, a Polynesian group of islands in the South Pacific, which also makes beautiful baskets.

Unfortunately, they may not be producing many baskets in the near future, since the islands have been seriously damaged by the recent volcano eruption and subsequent tsunami in the Pacific Ocean. Almost a month after the disaster, the extent of the damage still is being determined, as Tonga has been pretty much cut off from access to the rest of the world.
