Looking for rough age and what the stone might be made of? It's translucent. There's a mark on the pin which looks like initials and another tiny one on the edge of the back of the setting that's impossible to make out.

    Moonstone, methinks. And late Victorian?

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

Could be initials 'ncc', ncl', 'nci'.....just can't tell......

    INITIALS MBE.jpg

And couldn't find any legible marks on the pretty pin....

In the UK I usually find these with early 20thC hallmarks, 1910-25. Could be a moonstone but not a typical colour unless the lighting has made it look a bit different. I'm not sure they were making 'opalite' at this time but I guess some forms of opalescent glass is possible, I can't say I have seen any this early before though.

Perhaps it's the wrong way up? I turned the photo but it's not much clearer. Could it be 930 or 950 with the top bit missing? thumbnail_IMG_20220212_162540.jpg

It's definitely silver and over 100 years old. I've never known where that particular style of "knifewing" pin came from. The stone could be a potch opal for sure. (no "fire")

Thank you, I think you're right. I bought it at a fair (cheap) thinking it was glass but my gemstone tester thinks it's a stone...it's not an all singing all dancing one and just tells me 'stone' 'not stone' or 'diamond'. When I turn it in the light I can see a colour reflection that's kind of pinkish and looks to be within the stone rather than a surface reflection, which really confused me... My phone camera doesn't capture what my eyes are seeing unfortunately. Having looked up potch opal it seems to fit :)
