I'd like to find a date and also the maker. Of this remarkable antique mahogany & cane folding chair could have been made for use as a picnic or campaign chair. Either way, it was definitely made for travelling purposes. It's beautifully made too, the wood has a lovely patina, but the cane was restored in 1980. If you know and details please let me know.

better pic needed of the mark.
it's clearly made in France though, with the typical remark SGDG which means "sans garantie du gouvernement". that equals about a "protected" or "registered" in other countries.

More, I think, that although the design has been officially registered, the government makes no representation that it will work properly.

    Welcome Vagabond!
My mother/grandmother had a set of 4 very similar chairs that went with a wood card table. When not in use, they could be folded and stored as could the table. They also matched some other non-folding chairs they had.

which means that it was patented but without being tested by stately authorities/technical institutes. it simply means that the state records the patent, but the producer still bears responsibility for the proper functioning of his products. furthermore - if I remember correctly - that brevet was valid for only a certain time and had to be re-newed after 5 or 10 years.

Nice chair. Really difficult to tell how old this is. Would think at least Pre-WWII. but could be a lot older.

Hi All, thank you for your comments have spent several more hours looking into the makers marks (see new Pics) and as far as i can now make out.

The BTs.S.G.D.G. EN FRANCE at top &A1ETRANGER at bottom stand for (as pointed out)

This mention was established by the law of 1844 which states that patents are issued "without prior examination, at the risk and peril of the plaintiffs, and without any guarantee of the reality, the novelty or the merit of the invention, or of the fidelity or accuracy of the description ". This mention disappeared in 1968.

This text is the invention of Napoleon Bonaparte, according to the decree of September 27, 1801.

The VL underscore CE are the makers stamp have been unable to Find them, any help would be appreciated.

Also found a very similar chair (See Pic) very similar but with leather seat and not marked, have emailed the seller to see if I can get some more information.

    Thank you Again.
