Featured complex millefiori stars paperweight signed JL

Hi

Does anyone know who the initials JL might belong to? Or of any good resource to look through to find out?

Any other info would be great too! Not signed on base.

It looks like a bunny to me in the first picture.

 

Personally, I think that's a bird in flight, but I also see what you're saying, @KikoBlueEyes ! Louise's 2nd image, to ME, shows the bird more accurately than even what I tried to sharpen!!

Maybe but there is a very conveniently placed bubble that makes the two initals look joined but they are separate, it looks like either JL or back to back JJ or LL. Thanks!

Is it just me or is it very scratched up ? Is it possible to get that buffed out? Very pretty thing regardless.

 

It does look very scuffed, but that can be polished out. I'm trying to think who would have used that cane.

It is unfortunately scuffed but the scuffs feel quite superficial - I've been reading up on best way to buff them out.

I will keep looking and be sure to update.

Cerium oxide for a start. But don't do anything till you get at attribution: that thing is 19th C.

If you're on Facebook, the paperweight group run by Alan Thornton is good, too. Someone will know the canes. French is a possibility, but Bohemian is also a good call.

It looks like this pre 1940 Chinese example (left) however I don't think there are any initials on the Chinese one. Is this a case closed or could the Chinese one be a French/American copy? The Chinese one looks a lot more 'bubbly' to me, if that makes a difference. No yellow tint either no matter what lighting I use. I will keep digging and try the paperweight forums too..

 

Baccarat used lots of silhoutte canes...esp animal and plants and zodiac.

 

That Y cane is Ysart, I suspect. I don't think the crab is a crab, just a squish.

Old Chinese weights didn't really have signature canes. And you're right, the glass recipe on yours isn't yellow.
