    Hello,
I just purchased this new painting. It has some damage and has a bad repair, but I thought I would give it a new home. The painting says "Scotland by the Sea" at the bottom center. I am asking for help with the artist's name, as I have been unable to figure it out. I also would like ideas about the age. As always, I really appreciate any information and/or comments. Thank you!!!

Gonna be tough to find the artist as it appears to be an amateur style. Date appears to be 1950s. Signature looks to be wikohl? Nikohl? Mikohl? As I could not find anything on those names I'm afraid it's just hang it on the wall and enjoy type pieces! Still a nice look to it!

I think it’s Lil John L. It resembles sir John Avery but I could be way wrong, similar styles.

I think it's a commercial grade of painting, not abjectly amateur. Your big problem is the damage.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

I have no clue on the signature, but like the painting very much! Love the sheep and birds! But what on earth did someone glue that patch on with??!! THAT might take some professional repair, but do-able by a pro!! Love the perspective along the walkway too!

Yes, the damage is horrible. Someone actually used an iron to iron on that patch and you can see a mark on the painting. It was very cheap and I thought I would perhaps rescue it. I have several other pastoral paintings, so it fits in nicely. I also like the perspective.

Wow! I think you are probably right. Most of his paintings are landscapes...and it says he traveled often. Thank you very much! I find the search to be very interesting...[/QUOTE]

I have a print of this painting I got from my Great Grandmother. I found the date 1804 on it. I was able to find the painters name some where on the internet where it was listed. I'm sure I have that information at home but won't be there till April. I will contact you when I find it.

Hi Elaine...just wondering if you had a chance to look at your print yet? Thanks

If I may ask, where was this purchased? (I'm looking at a different W. Kohl and geography might help -- even though paintings move around a bit. ;) )

I doubt if this will help, but it was purchased in southern Arizona.

1804? Do check the date please, Elaine (and welcome!) That seems very unlikely.

Here's Willi Kohl's signature. (And he wasn't born until 1888.)

Actually, that is one of three states that could convince me I'm on to something.

And it is the most convincing of the three (because it is the least likely of the three to be a coincidence).

I was never 100% convinced that the German W Kohl mentioned was a match, but when someone said they had a print that matched, I didn't think about it again. Until it got bumped.

So. First I found this painting by an "unknown" W Kohl

    https://www.bukowskis.com/en/lots/8...tist-oil-on-board-undistinct-signature-w-kohl

    temp02.jpg

Now, the signature is not an obvious match, but if you dink around with the image and look at the strokes of the "w" and compare it to the strokes of your "w"... well, there's a significant similarity and it's not the standard way to stroke a "w".

(edit SIDEBAR: I'm not convinced that the above painting is by the same artist as yours... its existence is what sent me down the research road. )

So, then I started doing some research and found William Richard Kohl (who sometimes went by Richard William). William was born Jan 1901 in Maryland. William died in 1980 in Maryland.

William worked all his life (or at least as far as I can track him) as an artist. He traveled to England in 1928. To France in 1932. He served in the Army from 1942-1945. I have not yet found his military records, so I'm not sure where he was stationed.

When he wasn't traveling or in the service, he was in Maryland.

William never married, never had children. No direct heirs. He did have two brothers and a foster sister. His foster sister had no children. One of his brothers had no children.

That leaves the one remaining brother, Philip Gilbert Kohl (named after his father). PG had one son, also Philip Gilbert, and one daughter, Jane Kohl.

I'm not sure what happened to Jane, but the youngest Philip Gilbert died in 2004. In Tucson, Arizona.

So. I think this "W. Kohl" from Maryland, is your W. Kohl. I have no other art to look at, no other proof.

    But I believe. :hilarious:
