Has anyone got any idea who may have painted it?

There is a paper hanging from the bottom of the canvas in a picture above. First line of text is Made in China. I don't think we'll ever know who actually painted this.

I can certainly see why you were attracted to it but... Almost impossible to identify artist, I'd think, especially if auction house was unable to do so. To my eye, both it and frame are Mid-Century and I would extrapolate that "Dufy" and "Foyer" are a decorator's labels as to client and placement. (You might want to check some old local telephone books for your area and see if there was a Dufy family living at a upper middle class address in the mid- to late- 1900s.) The technique is impasto, of course. Hope your intention is to hang and enjoy.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

The very first image of this painting isn't shown at STRAIGHT ON....close, but some angle....which in my HO, will cause some distortion when observing! So I took and straightened it....and to ME, PERSONALLY, I do NOT find it so very much OUT of proportion, when you look at the darkness of the whole scene, the shading on his sleeves, coat (or jacket) and pants, including how MUCH of his wrists are showing bare.....and the angle he is sitting at.....sort of coming towards the viewer.....to me....it's mostly a matter of perspective......I rather like the painting.....he's SO pensive.....

Thank you. I did think the odd foreshortening was due to angle of photograph. What do you think the touch of color on his left might be?

Something to do with the stool he's sitting on maybe??? Squint your eyes when looking at it....sometimes can get a better 'eyeball' on it!!!

Perhaps a bouquet on a low table?

Thanks for your further observations and comments, I have certainly enjoyed it hanging on my wall. Being close to it myself I think it has had a few issues with paint loss and possibly been restored a bit when it was relined. Someone in the past has obviously thought it was worthy of looking after and my feeling is that it has some age to it probably early 20th century. I thought at one point the style reminded me a bit of Archibald Knox's portrait painting but I was assured that this was not the case, so onwards we go Archibald Knox.jpg

A tad more abstract but... Certainly in the style of Archibald Knox. I'm going to disagree with you re the date of your painting because I think the casual pose and costume point to a somewhat later date.

It has been a while but I can update you on this painting. Yesterday I found the artist that I believe painted it,
Tadeusz Cybulski Polish artist 1878 – 1954 Krakow

What are your basing your attribution on?

Hi Debora, I am basing it purely on the way the paint has been applied, the background colours used and general similarity of style and use of light and shade

Attribution would be the next stage, do you see enough visual evidence for me to take that next step or do you not agree with my hunch?
