Old auction find?

Discovered this lonely guy at an auction. Can’t seem to find any info on him?

 

I'd think it was a little souvenir painting. From México or somewhere similar. What does the backing board look like? Is it imprinted with words or just a design?

If you're really interested, I believe part of the signature is behind the frame at the bottom, so you might want to take the painting out of the frame to see......

It does look like writing partially hidden there.

Well, he’s out of the frame. Here’s what I found. It is done with chalk, and not a print. Still can’t seem to make out the signature? Any suggestions? Thanks

 

I don't know if any of these paintings are the original but it seems like such a copied figure that it must have been popular somewhere.

So most likely people painted portraits of him and hung them in their homes or sold them, and had his portrait hanging on a wall, like those of the Virgin, or Christ, to pray to and burn candles under, and he would watch over them...

Have you seen a real photo of him?

 

There are a number of photos of him online. The ones I've seen show him with a long beard, fairly short hair and in a suit coat (or similar). He also seems to have an odd, broken looking, nose.

It could still be him.
