I found this yesterday at a local thrift store. In came in from the same donor that gave the store a Lourdes Gomez painting that I asked about yesterday.
I've heard of Maitland Smith - makers of fine reproduction furniture - but until I looked this piece up I didn't know they also made paintings.
I think this is a painting but am not sure - there are not a lot of Maitland Smith paintings to compare and I haven't found another like this.
It feels like it's on a board? (see last photo back looks kind of like a honeycomb?) and feels a little sandy - maybe chalk? And I can't feel any ridges that a turning brush would make.
It measures 40" x 32" and it's not signed anywhere.
    Is this a painting or a print/litho?
As always I appreciate the help from you all!

Probably a type of factory art made with airbrushed watercolor and stencils. Paintings of the same type were produced in the '50s and '60s. You will find them with signatures like Bernard and Harris.

Yours, I would guess, is a later incarnation of the same idea and probably from the '70s or '80s.

The prices I saw for their paintings are really high - and it doesn't even have the artist's signature - if the prices are real I like this kind of factory art!

Maitland-Smith is designer high end. Everything I sell with that label does extremely well - even when the sticker "Made in the Philippines" is on it! What a great find!

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

I like the picture, factory or not!

Interesting info on Maitland Smith HERE.

Among other things, it says MS was founded in Hong Kong in 1979 and, in 1981, shifted its base from Hong Kong to the Philippines.

So this is from 1979 - 1981 - but I can call it vintage Maitland Smith right?

If it's from 1979-81 I wouldn't hesitate calling it vintage.

Hi Laura. I have an ALL brass obelisk with round ball feet and a round sticker on the bottom that says “HAND MADE AND DESIGNED BY MAITLAND SMITH LTD. HONG KONG”. There is another sticker probably from when it was purchased from Max Furniture with the purchase price and MS number. I am looking to sell it but I can’t find any others like it online to value it at. Do you know anything about this obelisk? I am also in the N Atlanta area so I’m happy to bring it to you if need be.
