Amazing. I would have guessed high quality seeing just the insert.

Gorgeous, honestly. And great eye once again.

I'm still struggling with stamped marks on silver, luckily I have progressive glasses so can usually make out the word "sterling" but marks still perplex me. There are 4 photos of marks above (photos 6,7,8,9) can Mr. Nate or someone tell me what each one is?

Thank you so much everyone for your messages on the post, I really wasn't expecting so many people to love the piece (I certainly love it). @bluumz I'll send you a private message about polishing.

@Lucille.b regarding the markings on the piece; I didn't have the chance to see them before making the purchase because the maker really went out of their way to make them hard to find. Factoring in the tarnish on the piece, they might has well have been invisible. Before I made this purchase, I started by doing research; I was focused on something French or German based on the style, so I went to see if I could find comparable pieces that were real silver. Based on that search, I felt there was a 50% chance I would be getting real German Hanau silver, and a 50% chance I was going to get some heavy silverplate french stuff. Once I actually got the piece in my hands, while looking for marks, I could feel the piece 'felt right', it was flexible in my hands, not rigid, and I just needed marks to prove it. Admittedly, when I found the marks, I just tried to find a match for one of the marks, I truly don't know what they mean, but I know if I could match them to a German Hanau silver page, I had a winner. I focused on this mark because it seemed the most identifiable among the group:

    IMG_2705.jpg

I think I matched it incorrectly to a different maker, and now that I'm looking over the Hanau marks page, there are a number of makers who used a mark similar to this. All that I really cared about is that it matched to some to confirm my belief that the item was silver. It is great to figure out the actual maker, but not the most important detail to me in that particular moment.

As for the use, I have no idea, that's one thing I'm still trying to figure out. Here's how the previous owner was using it:

As far as size, here's my preferred method to relate size, the soda can method ;)

Thank you Johnny. None of my family members are really into silver, so it's so nice to be around fellow enthusiasts on the forum. I still have so many pieces that I never got around to making a post about...someday I'll get more pieces out to share with you all :)

It's cobalt blue and bling - hard to miss with that combination! It's too big for a master salt, but would work great for serving pickles or other oddments. Or of course for what the prior owner had in it.

I just have to pop in again and repeat what several others have said... I just love the cobalt and silver combo! And the shape is fabulous!

You have my permission to mention me in your will... ;)

We had some cobalt/silver items when I was a kid. Don't know what became of them. This looks like a pickle dish. I think it would've had either silver tongs or a silver fork of some sort for serving.

I vote for a condiment dish. You could fit that cranberry jellied thing  they sell that people eat at Thanksgiving in that I think.

Pearls, not liking that cranberry that plops out of the can, complete with can marks? We have that every year at Thanksgiving and even other occasions. It's tastes pretty good. I have a special glass dish specifically made to serve jellied cranberry. I slice it and serve it using a sterling silver cucumber server. It's lovely! LOL!

Hi Ola, yes that is the one I meant. My mother had a glass serving dish (may be fire king or anchor hocking) that she used year after year after year for the cranberry thing that had the rings from the can. Small known fact, the company removed the rings on the cans and the people went nutz wanting those rings and the co went bak to adding the rings to the can.

My mothers was literally the only person at the table who ate any of it. And as I have mentioned before, you could bet your bottom dollar that it would stain the tablecloth every time it was used.

I was never a fan of this cranberry stuff. I remember going to have hot open turkey sandwiches at restaurants and always giving my mom that little paper cup with the cranberry jelly in it.

Here is the one my mother had. I think I have it now.

You need the rings to cut it evenly. I have my mom's pressed glass dish. I actually think it is a celery dish but the cranberry fits perfect and yes I use it every Thanksgiving and Christmas And you must use the cranberry serving spoon! cranberry.jpg

Nope we did not use the proper spoon for sure. My parents had this huge silver ware set that they got when married and I am pretty sure it had a serving spoon in it.
And yet a simple kitchen knife was used to cut some and therein comes the mess. Splatter city. LOL The rest of the table was set with that pretty silverware on every holiday.

HaHaHa! So many memories. I have the AH Wexford dish and at one time it came as a set with the above pictured round flat server (I found one once with original box). Didn't know they tried to remove the can rings (aghast!). Not surprised people wanted the rings, they do help with cutting, but not really necessary. Here's the set. The photo on the box must have been taken during the "no can rings" period, lol!

The people also got upset because the plop sound made by the rings when the cranberry stuff came out of the can was gone Heavens to Mergatroid. NO plop sound... call the food police.

I don't think ours came with that extra serving piece, it may have but was never put to use.

I was watching some interesting food related stories on the History Channel last night.
How decisions were made and products created in the past. I never knew KFC had chicken littles in the past, I only bought the original recipe in the bucket or box.
    How I loved KFC
