Brass or bronze ape object

Found this listed for sale online. I like money related items. What’s an ape if not a monkeys cousin so I decided to buy it. I believe it’s a gorilla. It’s a bit confusing to me. It looks like a brass novelty item at fist glance of the face. The details are simple but nice but still a bit basic. The top rim and base and thickness of both make it seem better made than just a novelty item. Almost looks kind of Japanese made to me. Like maybe a censer? It doesn’t look Japanese in artistic style but the way it’s made has me wondering about it. Japan/Asia doesn’t have gorillas but Japan did seem to have a fascination with some African animals. I know there’s a lot of hippo statues that are Japanese made. This piece is also almost 2lbs which sounds more like bronze than brass considering it’s size. The tone looks more brass though. I don’t have this in hand yet so these are just the sellers photos. They bought it at an estate sale. Any thoughts on its use or origin?

The bottom has that resiny line look to it. That would be a kick in the teeth if it was the most metally looking resin ever.

 

Tap it with a fork (utensile) - brass will "Tink" - resin will "Thunk"

 

Thanks. Once I have it in hand if I can’t tell the difference between metal and resin w/o a test I’ll be in big trouble. It won’t be here for a few days.

Yeh was wondering if for matches/tooth picks but probably too big for that. Could be as you said.
