Aparently, Avon Skin So Soft oil is brilliant as a repellent. Our royal marines swer by it. ;)

Probably just as bad in some parts of the Highlands during the summer season. I know someone who is allergic to midge bites. And he is a Scottish hillwalker!

While in Scotland we went to see the movie Edie which is about an older woman setting off to hike the Highlands. It's a simple movie but on target.

I got a real introduction to Scotland, Edinburgh, the Highlands, Orkney, Skye and more, all fabulous! Have to say the people were incredibly friendly!

    edited to correct movie title.

I'll look for the movie for inspiration! Everyone, without exception, I talk to say the same thing re Scottish friendliness, which appears far more genuine than any state here claiming to be 'nice' (friendly but at a distance - there's a difference). So my concern for a companion isn't one of safety but is instead quite selfish and truthfully unscrupulous but not without honesty at least? :angelic::rolleyes: Thanks so much for all your encouragement. :)

And I agree. I have Scottish relatives, and spent countless holidays there. There is nothing fake about the Scots, they are far too down to earth for that.

    No way Jose.

You can't give off scented perfumes when on an operation, trackers pick you up in minutes.
    No tobacco, soaps, nothing.
Deodorant to mask sweat was neutral Alum Block
Ingesting vitamin B kept the mozzies and midges away.
Even the diet was designed so you didn't poop much.

Someone has obviously been paid to promote this.
They might wear it on base but definitely not on operational duties fighting guerillas and insurgents.

Imagine having to hold off fighting whilst you apply your perfume or because your lipstick has smudged.

In my day you would have got beaten up and drummed out on your arse.

Those would be the 'wicked Hielanders'?:hilarious:
A wonderful term, I think we got it from a plaque in Elgin, possibly something about the 'Wolf of Badenoch'.

I don't think that's the issue here, Davey, and a bit chauvinistic to boot? You are mixing the brand with the product's supposed effect. But you are correct in that it doesn't really work - just one of many toxic american urban legends :D : https://consumerist.com/2015/05/14/fans-of-avons-skin-so-soft-as-a-bug-repellent-are-wrong/

LOL - I have no idea what you are talking about, AJ, but it's intriguing nonetheless. I have to look it all up now...wicked Hielanders, wolves of Badenoch... We get to learn so much more on this forum than just about old things. :p:D

I get that you have experience in all this for sure - that's established. You name several other ways to eliminate odors etc, however, that have nothing to do with women's products. So the sentence regarding those was IMO unnecessary and not really appropriate. If you found yourself with really stinky underarms, you'd apply the powder alum asap, right? Same thing if the Avon product had no smell to it then, you may have used it as well, if effective. Am I right in that, sir? ;)

No, I was trying to point out that no cosmetics were carried, no not powder that leaves evidence behind.
Preventing the smell of sweat was to avoid detection, not so you smelled nice.
No chemical repellents were ever used.

Hielanders is the Scots (not Gaelic) way of saying Highlanders.
I used to know some descendants of the Wolf. Perfectly nice people, no wicked Hielanders.:)

Is he the origin of the Hound of the Baskervilles story? The "Wolf" out earning his cruel and rapacious reputation? Badenoch...sounds so familiar.Oh, wait, I'm thinking of Boris Badenov, named after Boris Godenuv, who was a Russian tsar. Never mind! hahaha Screen Shot 2018-12-16 at 2.54.21 PM.png
