    Hi all,

I recently purchased this beautiful bronze statuette.

Could anyone please help with identifying the manufacturer's mark.

The piece is 13 cm tall

Just to see how it would look:

Can't help with the foundry mark. These bronze & ivory figures seem to date largely to the 1920s, often French. Haven't so far been able to find one of a woman spinning. Interesting piece.

Welcome, Rod. Is there really no other mark on the piece? And can we see her from the back, please? As much info as you can provide, in pix & words, will increase our chance of success.

I considered Clotho, but it didn't get me anywhere.

I think you showed this here back in April. Unfortunately, when you search bronze ivory, or chryselephantine, sculpture, you get inundated with art deco. This is likely earlier. Sculptures of this type were being produced in Victorian and Edwardian times. Two French names I have encountered are Etienne Watrin and Carrier-Belleuse. No doubt there were a plethora of others.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

I like it. Is her clothing in Medieval, or Renaissance style?

Another word you can use in searching is chryselephantine.

    Hi Bronwen,

There doesn't appear to be any other mark on the piece, just some decoration on the back of the chair.

I have attached a few more photos.

    Thank you

    Rod

Which reminds me, I don't see any traces of gilding on this piece, do you?

If the hands were also in ivory, this would strike me as similar to these pieces by A-E Carrier-Belleuse:

The link for this one leads to a derelict site that no longer has photos:

Interesting idea. But sitting down & spinning?

    The chair is also interesting:

I have been assuming the face is ivory. It certainly has that appearance from a little distance, but I have begun to wonder. Are you able to get a clear closeup of the face? We need to be able to see the material in detail; even then it may not be possible to make a determination.

    JMHO.
rough casting, probably French. what they call "yellow bronze" when it starts to fall to the brass side. head most probably ivorine.
and yes the technique is sometimes called chryselephantine, although it's not in the strictest sense of the word.
