    Hi all!
Just yesterday, hubby received this photo.
It was taken on the Isleta Pueblo in New Mexico. There are no marks on the photo, and it is mounted on a piece of cardstock.
It was probably printed from the negative 50 years ago. There's a big coffee stain across it.

We are not sure if the man on the horse is his grandfather (b. 1891) or great grandfather(b.1852)

If we could pinpoint the age of the photo, then we might know who it is.

I'm thinking this photo was taken in the 1930s. I see telephone poles( or maybe heating vents) in the background and the sweater on the rider looks to be from that period as well.
The rider is also wearing boots with laces.
I'm unfamiliar with saddles, but that may be a clue as well.
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance!!

I'd think 1930s was about right.

Yes, that was my first impression. The family is trying to say it is great grandfather, born in 1852.
But I think it is grandfather.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

I think the sweater would be a good dating clue.
And if this print is from the early 1960s or so, I'm interested in the fact that it is mounted on cardstock. Pretty unusual for the aesthetic of that day, unless somebody was trying to replicate an earlier era. Even by the 1930s, though, card-mounted photos were on their way out. There were a lot of studio folders in photos at that time, though.

It's really just a piece of cardboard. I don't think it was done by a studio.

    The photo itself is 4"x6".
    The card is 7"x9"

I'd be thinking more 1920s than 1930s, but I'm no expert. That's not great-grandpa either way; the guy in the image look like he's in his 30s at the oldest.

Yes, my thoughts, too. He does look young, too young to be born in 1852.

Unless the picture is from 1902 and even then it would be pushing it. Without the guy in the sweater, the rest of the scene could be 19th century easily.

I have a little more info on this photo.
We have now been informed that great grandpa is the man standing in the photo. We don't know who the rider is.
Therefore, if the photo was taken 1920s-30s, then it all makes sense.
Thanks to all who chimed in!!

    Here's another photo.
Great-grandfather is seen here, second from left.
It looks like an older photo, and he appears to be wearing the same hat.
Notice the lady inside the screen door.

Love the hats! Gotta get me one of those...

I think great grandfather's is the best.

The gringo on the horse's hat...not so much. (LOL) The guy on the ground got the better end of the sartorial deal.
