Here is the frame and hopefully a better face. I looked at the monogram again in the corner, I may be being a bit silly but I looked again at Frederick Leighton (Associated closely with Dorothy Dene) and found his monogram, have a look. I'll post this, pictures to follow, having a picture sizing moment (age related)

I noticed this too, ascribed it to gouaches used for the white and thought perhaps the painting was a bit "bleached out" by a photograph flash? It does appear to be done with gouache paints.

However, laid paper is not smooth. Not at all.

Well THAT's interesting! I think the lamps are reflections of someone's livingroom? ;)

But now I think this is a print too...

If that is the OP's original frame enlarged in Debora's post, the frame is VERY new!

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

In the first post, the image was shown as if it were in the back of a frame, as picture hanging hooks can be seen at the sides. The frame shown at that point was also damaged. Not sure if the gold-colored frame shown later is the front of the one in the original post? Or has the image been re-framed?

I won't be much help with this one, but I do like the picture. And welcome to Antiquers, @steve lunn !

Sorry to have caused some confusion. I meant to say that it was on 'wove' not 'laid' paper, senior moment! The picture is mounted on a seperate frame that the paper is fixed to, much like a canvas would be. That then is put into the Frame (the gold one) together with the glass as you see, hence the reflections, that is as I bought it a couple of years ago. I took the close up of the face through the glass. In the auction it was called a pre-raphaelite watercolour, it was an auction of a respected art and antique dealer who had died.

Perhaps a nice, sharp, close-up photo of the area that may be a signature would help someone identify it.

I've taken the picture out of the frame and done a close up of face and potential monogram/signature

Sorry, didn't see your Christies comment before I posted, I'm not familiar with their numbering, are you?

I had a similar situation and someone on the forum recognized the format of the stencil. I was able to contact Christie’s and ID my painting. I will check my old post and tag the user.

There is no substitute for having something to lay eyes and hands on in person. You'd be in the best position to know if you're seeing a signature or just background. :)
