Beautiful oil on board of the Venice Grand Canal. The signature is a nightmare and I don’t know anymore (no surprise there) The frame looks 70’s to me? I also e-mailed the dealer where it was framed (their details were still listed) But it seems they might have closed down over the last years (which is a pity as they were established in 1902) The painting itself is 60cm x 30cm. Any thoughts or guesses as to the artist? Many thanks and keep well

    Not a clue. But 1950s, I'd think.

    Hi Debora. Thanks for looking and for replying (and the links). I have tried the combinations that I could think of and looked at other paintings on line. The only conclusion that I came to is that
    just the style of the painting (obviously not the signature) reminds me somewhat of the Edward Seago painting: A grey day on the Grand Canal Venice.

    Very similar in composition to the Seago work (although the viewpoint is different) but, of course, a very popular view.

    @Debora
    Unfortunately I’m having no luck with the signature. However in your opinion would you say that the artist of this painting is well
    skilled and accomplished? Please let me know what you think.. Thank you

    It certainly appears (from the photographs) to have been done by someone who knew what he was doing. Here's information about the gallery in the Journal of the Pretoria Historical Society. It was indeed a fine art gallery and exhibited artists from both South Africa and abroad.

    Should add that could be early 1960s too.

    I’m about to give up trying to figure out this artist’s name.. Anyone maybe want to venture a last round guess?
