Hi there, I would appreciate your opinions on this little jewelry box I picked up a few weeks ago. The faux hinges have a very di box003.jpg box002.jpg box001.jpg stinctive design to which I was drawn, and the general look is more hand-finished than usual. There are no marks or labels whatsoever, though I was half expecting to see the little ostrich mark (which is what I actually collect, well, in theory).

I’ve seen two similar pieces on the internet with the exact same lid design, but one was a cigar box (cedar lined, I think) and the other a glove box (twice as long), and there was some unsubstantiated reference to Liberty & Co (yeah, you wish!)

    So, what do you think?

It is gorgeous, Fern. I would call it Art & Crafts, so Liberty wouldn't be far off the mark (although there is no mark:confused:).
    Could even be Glasgow School.

The little ostrich is always nice, but I don't think the box speaks with a German accent.

See a little Egyptian Revival there.

    Thanks - that was quick!
Yes, I thought I saw a little Egyptian vibe too.
I think it's later than Arts and Crafts proper, but, yea, that's why I like it!

    Love this box!.
Do you think the brass coloured patterns on either side resemble stylised snakes coming out of urns? There are two on each side and both have a eye and mouth. Or am I seeing something that’s not there :hilarious:

Nothing wrong with your vision. Your interpretation is based on, uhmm, something.

    Gin?
    Magic mushrooms?
    Sleep deprivation?
    All of the above

It might well be Liberty. Perhaps email them: they've extensive archives.

More like papyrus leaves on the repousse work, but hey, if you see snakes and ladders and things, well, there's nothing wrong with that.

The box is lovely, beautifully crafted. My day was made with the Liddle German. Thank you Firemandk
