Hi people, I picked up these two figurines at auction recently. I am a fan of Royal Amphora and these looked promising. They were described as 'pair plaster female standing mirror holding frames'. I haven't seen anything like them, not that this means much. I did a bit of searching and found one or two very expensive Royal Dux versions but these aren't Royal Dux. Anyhow, might anyone out there know something about them - age, origin? Likely European. Thanks in advance. 31816692.jpg

    Not seeing Amphora quality here.

Perhaps better pictures would shed more light on them, but at the moment they look like plaster to me. Photo of the bottoms would help too. Also, can't figure out how they would hold a standing mirror.

Curious about your reference to Royal Amphora. . .there is Imperial Amphora & Royal Dux but don't recall ever hearing of Royal Amphora.

Thank you both for replying and I am delighted with the photo of one of my girls. I never thought of chalkware. It's all in the description. Pity it has been sold. Bleah, but I can look further now. With regard to the mirror element, there is a groove along the low wall/container of flowers or whatever it is supposed to be that the woman is standing next to, where the mirror slots in. In the few photos I've seen, the mirror seems to be shaped to fit the context. I am hoping to find something that suits the context eventually. Re the Amphora reference, I thought it was Royal Amphora but it is a bit confusing. I'll go with Imperial Amphora. Anyhow, thank you both again. Terrific help.

Well, I'm certainly confused. . .you said when you bought them they were described as 'plaster', that is what chalkware is.

Also, on the link janetpjohn supplied there are may photos showing the mirror.

I wrote a long thank you reply to you both for your very helpful input and the great photo and my computer promptly ate it or sent it off to Neverland. Havanother go. If I send it twice, sorry. Re Royal Amphora - not sure why I decided that was its name but it was all a bit confusing. I knew it wasn't Royal Dux. So I'll go with Imperial Amphora now. There is nothing at all on the bottom of the statuettes. The Etsy info and photo will explain the mirror element. And thanks very much for the photo and further info listing. Most interesting. Pity it was sold. I have looked a bit further and there are a LOT of Barbola mirrors :)

I'm not sure these are really barbola; it was a new term for me, but they look all one piece. Anyone know about barbola?
