Hi all - I've been a collector of Yogya (or Djokja) silver for about 15 years and have built up quite a collection, and some extensive background knowledge of the form. Happy to answer questions or offer opinions on Indonesian silverware, and might be interested in buying if it's a special item.

Welcome, Bob. We regularly get Djokja/Yogya silver here.
Does that mean you also have knowledge on Indonesian silver other than Djokja?:)

I have a mystery bowl, sold as Balinese which it definitely is not. Not Djokja or Palembang either, nor recognizable to me as another Sumatran or a Sulawesi style.
It has a thin tumpal border, so it could be some sort of Indonesian.

Some, though I don't claim to be an expert. Straits Chinese/Betawi, Riau and Balinese silver is often recognisable from the pattern and form, but there are a whole host of non-standard shapes and designs with obscure origins like Solo, Lampung etc. There are very few reference volumes in English - a few in Dutch, but nothing encyclopaedic that I'm aware of. By thin, do you mean the rim is unfolded? Balinese bowls almost always have folded rims. Happy to take a look if you post a pic.

    Thanks for replying, Bob.
I know Solo silver designs through my keris collection (silver sarongs), and it isn't Solo/Surakarta. It isn't Riau either, I should have mentioned that.
I mean the tumpal border is thin, a small border, not like the tall tumpals you usually see on Javanese and Madurese designs. The border is just below the rim, which is plain, undecorated (and folded).
And it is not Balinese, not bold enough.;)
Frankly, I don't even know for sure it is Indonesian.

I'll see if I can take pics, it is a dark day here. And my internet connection comes and goes.:(

I should have added, some elements look a bit like some Minangkabau pieces I have. But I am not convinced....
