Ive learned with my mother to just leave whatever I buy in the garage and sneak it in later ! She's not wrong when she says I buy too much junk . :)

It is under glass and maybe reverse painted on to the glass or just painted onto the mop then covered with the glass, I can’t get a pic at night will try tomorrow. I’m not familiar with these at all.

My friend used to assure her husband that she had had new things for ages, that explanation was usually for clothes and handbags though.

"What these old things"? They're Victorian, so they're definitely old!

You may be able to tell which surface the painting is on by examining it from the side.

Looking again, I would think painted directly on to the mop as the bright areas on the mop seem to be painted around to make a feature. With the moisture damage though it’s not really clear. It’s good the damage looks like clouds on first glance.

I see a fair number of these reverse-painted castles in larger wall picture versions. I would assume it's a romantic generic fantasy, probably not a real place. This is the first brooch I've seen!

It wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

It is reverse painted on the glass, with further enlightment in chatoyant MOP in some places, then backed with MOP held with the brass back:)

    Superb!

Perhaps it didn't just fall out but was taken out in order to dry the painting? Once dried, the pieces were replaced amateurishly.

I’ve seen another similar brooch where the paint has cracked around the edges. It’s been tested now, the 9ct acid just eats through pretty quickly:(
Kyra wouldn’t it be much more difficult to reverse paint on the glass and get the precise areas on the mop you want to emphasise? Not saying you are wrong it just not the way I would do it if given the task.

I think that is the whole point of eglomise'; to impress with the difficulty.

Here is my reverse painted brooch with open back, showing the little piece of MOP (tiny rectangle below the needle) placed to highlight the two houses which appear white on the front pic...
The brooch is Silesian iron wirework:)

Now Kyra is REALLY talking dirty. Silesian ironwork AND eglomisè painting in the same place. Not surprised she'd have found one though. I'm just surprised the steel isn't all rusty.
