Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

    Thank you.

Not sure a couple of sellers will think I'm needed on eBay. They each have one of those resin cameos of a woman holding a bird to her breast; both say theirs is shell. One is BIN for $325; the other is being auctioned, currently at a reasonable $40. I struggled with myself but just can't let this false info propagate if I can help it. Wrote both saying cameo is convincing & appealing but man made. Then gave each the other's item #. Better than my first impulse to just give them the numbers & say, 'You two should meet each other',letting them work it out on their own.

The products of this mystery company are pernicious.

And I wonder whether they even know enough to realize that if they are identical, they are not carved. You've done a good deed. I hope they realize that you did.

OMG Did an eBay search for marble plaque -table -lamp between $40 - 500 Their stuff is just everywhere, rarely correctly recognized as artificial.

Bet if they even take a look they will convince themselves that they see some significant difference. Who in H*** made these things? When? Where? Would a Pinterest board showing all the ones I've identified do any good? Maybe an image search would lead prospective sellers there?

Tested the Dante cameo surrounding, not gold:(
I’m leaving the soaking Bronwen, it seems pretty tight in the mount and I would worry it might crack if it expanded.

In that case, I'd probably leave well enough alone too.

The one running an auction, where the price was still under $40 has pulled the listing, although indicating that it is sold, until they can get it 'checked'.

The one with the BIN for > $300 coolly thanked me for my input.

Oy. I almost hope someone buys it and files an SNAD because it's costume sold as the real deal. It's the only way some people learn.

A recent purchase, guided by our ever-helpful @Bronwen. Both the cameo and setting have some issues but the price was so good that I couldn’t resist. Besides, one must have a Perseus cameo in one’s collection... :)

Just saw this in an auction, described as a woman's profile:

Am I imagining things or was that carved out of a piece of opal????

Yep. You will see many opal cameos attributed to William/Wilhelm Schmidt. In the majority of cases this is probably wrong.

Yet they list it as Victorian!

The diamond work looks Belle Epoque, but the punters don't know the term, so late Victorian it is. About 15 years too late, but oh well.
