Picked this up at an estate sale. It stands 3 3/4" tall, measures 2" across the opening and is 3" deep. What was it used for and age?

I pick these up when I see them, never paid much, I’ve always thought they were likely 19th century, Chinese ginger jars but they have been made for a long time so could be earlier or later.

Here’s mine, bit more decorated. The tower one is rather suggestive. They are pottery though btw not porcelain.

Coincidentally I was looking at a very similar one with a tower yesterday (but it was chipped and had no lid) Also see
described as being stoneware. And also stating 19th century. Here is one of the related listings I found

Boland, thanks, that is what I have. Thought this was maybe a jarlet or something close.

Chinese Provincial Ware 'ginger jar', I would say 19th century. Not just used for storing ginger though.
Nice that it still has the lid, most lost their lids during a long life of household use.
As @Houseful said, not porcelain, but pottery.
    There is that theme again.;)

True, I’ve never found one with a lid.
Btw the other side of the jar has a tower too, even more realistic!:)

4BADDC79-C3B3-442F-A4DB-511445BDE3F0.jpeg This is the one I saw. Tower on the one side and a cool boating scene on the other. But yes also no lid (a real pity)
