Just so silly (though I did once watch a guy play reasonably well with a golf club)...

If you're saying it's too long for a walking stick, it's actually a pretty average size, I'm 5'8" and that's about the length of mine - you might prefer one a bit shorter, and someone the height of your stepson would probably prefer a longer one...

The knife is just a whimsey of the carver, a decorative element - here are a couple of canes with knives by a different carver (I prefer the OP's):

I actually thought the blade was rusted carbon steel. But a closer look I see the wood grain. Thanks for the clarity.

Agreed. Some guy or gal who happened to like pool probably put it on for the "utilitarian purpose" :D of helping with pushing, avoiding floor scuffs, and preserving the stick's wooden tip--sort of like how folks add tennis balls to the rear feet of walkers. As others noted, that stick is too crooked for pool/billiards. Then again, I knew a bar hustler who would usually beat everyone and use the most warped house cue when doing so--just to prove he was that good. So, in keeping with Gary's vision of a cue, maybe someone not-so-spry but masterful at pool modified his cane for kicks and "schooled" his buddies and the locals.
