Thankyou so much I get much more pleasure and education out of sorting through cheap job lots and looking through the bargain bins than I do looking in the glass cases of dealers expensive pieces. I appreciate them and sometimes ask to look at pieces but most are out of my range. When I say I like broken stuff it’s amazing what they produce from under the table!
I find it amazing how many little treasures are chucked in job lots as pretty much worthless when they have such history.
I also love this forum that I couldn’t live happily without!
It gives me a wonderful place to go to mentally escape and learn so many interesting facts, particularly when the subject takes you in an unexpected direction or the post about something you didn’t even know existed.

Out of curiosity, what will vinegar do???? And am guessing you mean WHITE vinegar, not CIDER!!!

I would say 1890s, with that shortish hinge. The style is AH Renaissance Revival, part of 'Historismus', an important German language style term meaning Historic Revival.

 

Vinegar will damage the pearls, don't do it unless you plan to replace them. It will also damage any rhinestones!

 

Not if they're open-backed.

BTW - I've seen Historismus in an eBay selling pull-down menu recently, another indicator that they've imported some UK programming wholesale.

 

White vinegar usually. Yup, it can kill pearls but it's excellent as a cleaner , degreaser and zombie killer crud remover. I do vinegar, then ultrasound.
