Went to my favorite thrift store today and picked up his foo dog he’s 9 inches tall and 9 inches long, Think he’s cool what do the experts think? Is it OK to ask what the value might be?
To be honest I did a Google image search using one of the photographs and two pair of these came up under the heading foo dog I don’t know the difference
In case this link doesn't work, there's one on Ebay showing for $99., but I don't think that one is missing part of a leg.....could yours be old???? https://www.ebay.com/itm/165174807872?_trkparms=amclksrc=ITM&aid=1110006&algo=HOMESPLICE.SIM&ao=1&asc=20200818143230&meid=9962c4a7b02b4723b443f6ebcb625d39&pid=101224&rk=5&rkt=5&sd=223530565233&itm=165174807872&pmt=0&noa=1&pg=2047675&algv=DefaultOrganicWeb&_trksid=p2047675.c101224.m-1
They are pretty much the same, just the stylistic difference between regions, slightly different legends behind them etc. Most SEA countries have their own variation on the foo dog with particular features.
hi , I have seen many foo dogs or japanese Shishi in netsuke but never one with wings, looks more like a dragon to me ....
those flaps on the legs and those coming out of the front chest , unless thats supposed to be some sort of armour?
The one @Aquitaine found on ebay is virtually identical to yours - compare all of the views and the only differences seem to be in the chased designs that would have been applied by hand after the casting was made. The sizes seem to correspond quite closely as well. This would suggest that these may have been made from the same mold, indicating some level of mass production.
