    Hi all,
Whilst clearing out my late parents house I came across this "jug" tucked behind a chest of drawers in the cellar and I would really like to find out a bit more about it.
Firstly would you call it a jug, ewer or a vase? As it has a handle I'm not sure about vase but as it doesn't have a spout I'm not sure about jug or ewer.
Its in pretty poor condition as it has several chips, a large chunk missing from the side and a crack around the middle but for me that just adds to it's character. It stands 11" (28cm) tall.
It has a green glaze and is stamped 1798 on the base.
If anyone could help I'd like to find out if 1798 is the date it was made, where it may have been made and if it has any value? I don't want to part with it but if it is worth something I have to consider my brother and sisters as technically they would have an interest in it as part of my parents estate.
    Thank you for any help.
    Mike

I am sorry for your loss, Mike.

I wonder if it is 17Y8, instead of 1798. A measure maybe?
Just to help people search, did your parents also live in Devon?
Obviously that beauty wouldn't necessarily be from Devon, but it is a start.

Yes they were both born and raised in Newton Abbot. Like myself, my parents both lived in 3 houses all within 1/4 of a mile of each other. I lived at my parents house for 58 years and only saw the vase when we cleared the property.

It's good Devon clay. And Newton Abbot - lovely place - has a strong and long history of pots. It'd not surprise me if it's as old as that, either. I'd think not massive value, a few quid maybe. Bribe the siblings. ;)

Hi Mike and welcome. Great piece. Doesn't look like anything I've come across before sadly

But I can believe that it is that old as well with that interesting numbering

A low value would be fine by me as I really like it and I wouldn't feel guilty about keeping it. If it's worth something I would feel I had to sell it or at least tell the rest of them to be fair to the family. I really don't think 2 of them would care anyway but not sure about the other two.

I’ve asked a Devon expert for you. My personal view is that it could be the date it was made but it’s not my specialty.

Thanks Boland, it's an interesting thing to drive but great fun when the top is off and the windscreen is folded down. I've not been hit in the face by too many bugs!
