Featured Slave Tiles

I have a friend who bought some "slave tiles" at a garage sale.

Personally, I do not believe his were made by slaves.
A) They can be googled and found all over the United States and are always called "rare"
B) I've read there WERE tiles like these made by slaves, but brick manufacturers also started reproducing them in large bulk, with certain design being the most prominent in search results is most likely
C) I found a man who lived in Savannah that used to reproduce them in the early 2000s

Historically they have been said to have been used in the garden, or as grave markers.

Other sources are saying only 4 different plantations made them..

I just came across a whole PDF article on a man named Chris Phillips out of Savannah, Ga who learned to re-create the tiles in his backyard and sold them.
This guy went through the whole 9 yards to Historically recreate these. I dont know if yall have ever heard of Hewell pottery (some of the best potters here in Georgia, and some of the best people too!), but they have been here in Georgia creating pottery since the mid 1800s, and trained most of the potters here in the state (ie. Craven, Ferguson, etc). He contacted them to get tips on creating these tiles.

Fascinating! I never heard of them. I think you already know more about these than most people.

 

But I dont want to be the know-it-all who knows nothing
