    I vote for basket, not hat, Just seems to me that there would be wear to the inside if it were a hat. But that's just my opinion.

    Likely Nigerian Hausa............not that old........

    Sorry I missed the tag. But I do agree...it's African, the lid to a traditional Ethiopian bread (injera) basket.
