Maxwell Royal Chair Co Couch??

Hi there,

I recently purchased a house and there were a few pieces of furniture left behind by the owners. I am interested in finding out more about this Maxwell Royal Chair Co. couch. I found some information on the company itself, but nothing indicating that they made anything besides chairs. This couch has an authentic tag on it with pertinent information. Any help in figuring out more about this couch is appreciated! Thank you

Jessir, furniture companies that made upholstered chairs tended also to make upholstered loveseats and sofas.

This 1962 ad for Maxwell Royal shows some of the sofas they were offering at that time:

 

As with most furniture companies of its ilk, the only real "customization" involved which wood finish and which upholstery the customer chose.

 

If it was shipped to a furniture company rather than an individual, would guess it is standard issue. Expect there was a catalog with models and upholstery selections and you could mix & match, so maybe in the sense of I want 1 of style 3-6218-1 with upholstery 8456, Natural Gold, so custom in the sense that customer could customize to a degree. What is the word above 'cherry'?

 

Not custom made, except possibly for selection of the fabric from the choices available.

I had to laugh, then it was called brown cherry when I had my kitchen redone the color chosen was NUTMEG cherry!!!!!!!!

I was hoping for something more exotic. Seems like pretty much everything there is to know about it is there on the shipping invoice, bill of lading, whatever it is.

 

Thought 'rosewood' was the term of choice for brown that is ever so slightly red.

This might sound like a stupid question but is there actually any wood on it? It just struck me funny that it was mentioned on the tag but I just see upholstery.

 

How about posting the other picture, Jesslr? The one in the Gallery from the opposite direction.

 

There is wood on it, the legs and the back of the couch are the visible wood parts. Sorry I don't have a better picture right now.
