I purchased this wonderful painting, with this frame attached, at an auction held on a beautiful Boston shorefront estate about 50 years ago.

If it did have a signature it has chipped off. The painting was in this condition when I purchased it, but I loved it so much I did not care. 20210611_132415.jpg 20210603_065037.jpg

Can anyone help me identify the artist, subject matter location, and/or 20210611_132415.jpg 20210603_065037.jpg 20210611_132415.jpg 20210603_065037.jpg time period?

    Thank you!

    Hi John.
Firstly Im no art expert. To me the jungle river scene looks like a place like maybe Cambodia or such (but it could really be a number of places, looking at the canoe and vegetation) Are you sure this is an original painting? First thing I thought was ‘factory something’ that now pealing away. Is the frame plaster? Anyway I don’t have any great knowledge. Best also to take a photo of the back and give the measurements. The ‘art people’ with give you proper feedback..

I love it, gorgeous mood, and nice quality. It certainly looks 19th century to me.
@Debora , what do you think, mid to late-ish 19th?

It reminds me of some of the paintings by the 19th century Javanese painter Raden Saleh, but I don't think it is by him.

I'm getting vertigo looking at that wide shot:

As above, a photograph of the back would be helpful.

    Thanks for your help!

I had an local art appraiser come to the house, and he also thought it was possibly Frederick Church. He said "Whatever you do, do not let somebody talk you out of it. You have something special here!"

I agree, it is a good painting. After cleaning and restoring it will look amazing.
